#BehindTheScenes
Ever wondered what being cast in a show is like your first semester of college? 5 freshman cast in 6 Characters in Search of an Author reflect on their experiences navigating college life while simultaneously rehearsing for the performance.
Kacy Christensen: I assumed nothing was going to happen when I auditioned and it was scary, but I still tried. I was surprised when I got cast. The rehearsal process was like any other show, but I feel like I should've been better because I got cast my first semester and it’s not normal, so I feel I should've been some amazing star, but I’m just me. It’s stressful, but also I’m so grateful because its gotten me recognized in the department and I get to do what I love. I’m glad I get to try new things here and go beyond what I was always cast as in high school.
Caitlyn Gramer: The audition process was terrifying because I had no idea what to do. Jenny made me feel really comfortable, but it was still really scary, and I thought I bombed it. I was happy that I auditioned, and that I got called back. The rehearsal process was very well organized and I felt like I could keep up and do great, but juggling rehearsals with my night class was terrifying. (DO NOT TAKE NIGHT CLASSES). I felt like my input really mattered and I felt like people cared about what I had to say, even though I was a freshman.
Mary Abbott: This has just been a lot of fun! The audition room was not nearly as scary as I thought it would be because Jenny is awesome. It’s been really cool to work with everybody, I’ve done really weird shows in the past, but this one has just been amazing. Being a mechanical engineering major, I have to try extra hard to be involved in the department, but I’m really glad I did.
M’Kaila Simmons: The freshman jitters is hard enough, and adding this huge responsibility of being in a show was very difficult. I really learned how to multi-task this semester. Even if you don’t know how you’re going to make it happen, still do it. I’m glad I’ve made all of these friends it’s been an overall good experience.
Wyatt Hendricks: I am so excited I was able to be apart of this. I did not expect to get called back or even get cast, it was a huge confidence boost for me. Jenny was great about unifying the cast, I felt very welcomed and all of my input was taken seriously. Although it was stressful trying to balance school and rehearsal, the whole experience was worth the stress.
